Olympic Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos Will Reunite as Co-keynote Speakers at SJSU'S May 19 Graduation Ceremony

For the first time since 2000 when the Smothers brothers spoke, San Jose State University will have two keynote speakers at its 2012 graduation ceremony.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos are two of SJSU'S most famous students who are widely known for their Black Power salute after winning gold and bronze medals in track and field at the 1968 Olympics.

On the Friday preceeding the ceremony, they will both be at the Spartan Bookstore as John Carlos will be signing copies of his autobiography from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On the Sunday after the graduation ceremony, both will also be present at the annual alumni brunch at the Fairmont Hotel which begins at 10 a.m.

According to SJSU public information officer Ralph Nichols, "SJSU has been working for months to get both of them together."

Not only is it rare for there be two keynote speakers at this graduation ceremony, but to have spaekers of this historical magnitude will make this ocassion even more momentous.
